Keep an eye on your gums

Most adults will, at some point, experience gum disease. You probably won’t even notice it. Maybe for a while you see a little blood come out when you brush your teeth but don’t think much about it. Chances are this is gum disease.

At Elite Perio, treating gum disease in Perth is one of our areas of focus. One of the first things we do with all new patients, and any of our regulars coming for a check-up, is look for the early signs of gum disease. This is because gum disease is preventable and treatable, especially at the beginning. Left untreated, it can lead to tooth loss, so it’s really worth keeping an eye on your gums.

What is gum disease?

There are two forms of gum disease in Perth: gingivitis and periodontitis. The difference is how advanced the disease is.

In its early stages, we call is gingivitis. Gingivae is the medical term for the tissues surrounding the teeth. Plaque and bacteria can build up here if we aren’t vigilant about removing it with a good oral health routine. Even then, it’s not possible to remove it all with regular brushing and flossing. Over time, this hardens into tartar, which produces toxins that attack the gums. At this point, you may notice your gums starting to recede away from your teeth.

Periodontitis is when this advances to the next stage: the gums start to come away from the teeth, the teeth can become loose and even fall out.
