Have you got gum disease in Perth?
Do you know what is the biggest cause of tooth loss is for adults these days? It isn’t decay, as it used to be, it’s gum disease. Now that people are not losing their teeth to decay at an early age or having all their teeth removed to have a set of dentures, many more people are making it into their 50s and 60s and 70s with their natural teeth still in place.
That’s great, but it also means that gum disease has had more time to work away at our teeth and the supporting tissues. Gum disease in Perth has two stages and both are caused by the same culprit – dental plaque.
What is plaque?
Plaque is a sticky film that builds up on your teeth during the day, especially if you’ve been indulging in something sugary. Plaque is a layer of harmless mouth bacteria that feeds on the sugars in your mouth. The acids they give off aren’t so harmless though. They cause decay and gum disease, which is why you need to remove plaque twice a day with two minutes of brushing with a fluoride toothpaste.
You can also use floss, mouthwash and interdental brushes.
Gum disease has a number of stages.
Stage one – gingivitis
The acids from plaque start by irritating and inflaming your gums. They can bleed easily when you brush your teeth and they start to lift away from your teeth forming pockets where plaque can get between the two and start the next stage of gum disease. Gingivitis can be easily sorted with a diligent oral routine and regular trips to the hygienist to have plaque and tartar removed.
Stage two – periodontitis
Now that plaque is under the gums, the acids start to attack the root of the tooth and the bone that holds it in place. To sort this out before your teeth become loose and fall out, you need treatment from Dr Mahnaz Syed at Elite Perio.
Treatment for gum disease in Perth involves removing plaque and infected soft tissue from inside the gums before reconstructing lost bone if necessary. Local anaesthetic is used for the deeper work.
